After striking Guam on May 24th, Typhoon Mawar ravaged the island, causing extensive power outages and destruction. Powerful winds and rains downed trees and electricity lines, leaving nearly the entire island without power and running water.
Crews are diligently working to restore power, prioritizing critical infrastructure. Governor Guerrero declared the “all clear” and expressed gratitude for weathering the worst of the storm. Thankfully, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported.
Guam’s central and northern regions experienced nearly 24 inches of rain, leading to extensive flooding and damage. Survey teams are assessing the extent of the destruction. The recovery process is expected to be lengthy and challenging.
As of Friday afternoon local time, the center of the storm was about 430 miles west-northwest of Guam. The storm, now with a maximum sustained of 185 miles per hour, was moving west at 14 mph, according to the National Weather Service in Guam.
