At Tidal Basin, we are honored to recognize and celebrate the veterans who bring their unique expertise, dedication, and resilience to our team. Their journey from military service to civilian roles in emergency management reflects their commitment to protecting others and their adaptability. They are truly invaluable members of our organization.

Transitioning from military life to a civilian career is pivotal for veterans. Jobs for former military personnel aren’t always easy to come by. Finding the right civilian job involves navigating a period of adjustment that requires understanding, support, and the opportunity to apply the skills veterans developed while in uniform. At Tidal Basin, we are committed to creating an environment where veterans can seamlessly translate their experience into a new context, using their skills to protect and support communities through crisis.

Veterans bring a wealth of knowledge and skills indispensable to emergency management. Their ability to perform under pressure, make swift decisions, and navigate complex situations bolsters our organizational resilience. They also carry with them a disciplined approach and sharpened leadership and teamwork skills, benefiting our clients, partners, and internal teams. The technical expertise veterans possess—whether in logistics, communication, or crisis response—makes them uniquely qualified to excel in emergency management roles, where safeguarding lives and resources is paramount.

Jeremy Tompson, MCM, PMP, Air Force, Combat Medic, and Senior Public Assistance Project Lead at Tidal Basin, agrees. “There are numerous crossover skills between emergency management and the military. The ability to lead small teams of people in potentially austere environments is one skill that the military can teach you. I have found this skill to be especially useful, because being comfortable in unfamiliar situations can be challenging.”

The continuous contributions of veterans to the emergency management field underscore the indispensable role they play in fostering resilient communities. Whether they are leading response teams, planning recovery efforts, or coordinating resources, their commitment to community safety is unwavering. Veterans’ roles at Tidal Basin continue to be pivotal in enhancing the resilience and preparedness of the communities we serve, highlighting the meaningful nature of their work and the enduring impact they have in their civilian careers.

When asked, “What advice would you share with other military members considering pursuing a career in emergency management,” Richard Lee, United States Air Force, retired as a Chief Master Sergeant and Director of Response for Tidal Basin, responded, “Take advantage of the training opportunities the military provides, such as in-residence professional military education and online courses, to increase your knowledge of emergency and disaster preparedness. The leadership training and experience gained while in the military will be a strength you can build on when directing teams before and after a disaster.”

We deeply appreciate our veterans’ service to our country and the continued service they offer in their roles here. Their commitment to community, resilience in the face of challenges, and dedication to safety enrich Tidal Basin’s mission and culture.

To all veterans within Tidal Basin and across the nation, thank you. Your dedication inspires us daily and reminds us of the importance of service, both in the military and at home.
