Katie, daughter of Tidal Basin employee Linda Maiellano and her husband Mike Maiellano (an Adjusters International retiree), passed away in a tragic car accident in 2006 when she was only 22 years old.
“Kate was a bright spark of a kid,” said Linda. “She was loved by many and proudly focused on her work and career. When Kate passed away, Mike and I donated her organs and tissues — allowing our daughter’s giving spirit to live on through others. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor her. It’s what she wanted us to do.”
Linda recalls leaving the hospital and seeing a meteor shower above in the night’s sky and thinking “that’s Katie, that’s Katie’s star.” Shortly afterwards, Katie’s friends and family created the Katie’s Star Memorial Fund, a nonprofit that brings public awareness to the importance of organ donation and provides financial assistance to organ donors, recipients, and their families for uninsured medical expenses and travel costs.
Tidal Basin is proud to be a “Shooting Star” sponsor of this year’s golf outing. To participate in this upcoming fundraiser, or to learn more about sponsorship or donation opportunities, please visit katiesstargolf.com.
