Hurricane Florence made landfall in the Carolinas as a Category 1 hurricane. Florence caused thousands to lose power – homes, business, and communities are destroyed and the recovery process is just beginning.

As a North Carolina native, it is upsetting to see the widespread devastation Florence caused to our communities…as lifesaving activities begin to subside and long-term recovery begins, I encourage organizations to remain vigilant as they begin to rebuild. Use reputable, vetted experts in the field who understand the intricacies your organization will face in the coming months – a company that has the experience necessary to ensure a full recovery and furthermore, an action-plan going forward for future crises.”

Tips for Federal, State, Local Governments & the Private Sector

1.) Find out if your property is in a declared area by going to FEMA’s website
2.) File a claim with your insurance company as well

Failure to report property damage to your insurance company can affect your eligibility for federal assistance from FEMA

3.) Develop a Team

“A common denominator with those agencies that have difficulty with their recovery is the absence of progressive mitigation strategies, a detailed recovery plan and a team to implement both…”

4.) Determine your losses

“The foundation of a successful financial recovery following a crisis is an accurate and timely measurement of the loss.”

5.) Categorize your losses

Using FEMA’s required categories – “Following a disaster, categorizing losses must be accurately performed to avoid future conflicts with FEMA.”

6.) Determine eligibility for FEMA funds

“Once damages have been properly categorized, they must also be deemed eligible by FEMA before financial assistance can be obtained.”

7.) Develop a rebuilding plan

“Once the applicant, the state and FEMA have determined that a facility is eligible for Public Assistance, an evaluation is required to determine what actions must be taken to bring the facility back to its pre-disaster condition.”

8.) Develop a funding approach

“The process requires the same diligence, project management and communication with state and FEMA authorities to properly evaluate every opportunity available for your recovery plan.”

9.) Implement the recovery plan

Understand the key contacts from the state and FEMA management teams and their areas of responsibility.

10.) Final inspection, closeout and the audit process

“An organized, well-documented grant management strategy pays off during the final review of the project work during closeout and audit, and helps ensure that grant funding remains intact.”
